College of Lake County
Welcome to the College of Lake County Regional Competition
What is Science Olympiad?
Science Olympiad is an exciting, hands-on, team based program for grades 6-12 that encompasses all areas of science. A team of 15 students investigate up to 23 different events. Events focus on learning concepts in physical, earth, and life science—some of which take the form of engineering design challenges.
In March, a tournament at College of Lake County in Grayslake takes place. It looks much like a track meet but with an academic focus. Each student participates in one to four different events. Depending on the event, this might take the form of a paper/pencil test, lab practical, or demonstration of a pre-built device.
Medals are awarded to student competitors for each event and championship trophies go to the school whose team earns the highest overall point total in each division. The Regional Tournament at College of Lake County is one of ten regional competitions in Illinois and leading teams are selected to advance to the State Tournament in April at The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

PREPARATIONS BEFORE THE TOURNAMENT
THANK YOU for understanding the tight position we are in with event supervisors… We appreciate everyone reaching out and stepping up to make it happen for all of our participants. You’re the BEST! That said, we still need a bit of help.
- Check here to see what you’re supervising!
- Whoever is “in charge” needs to fill out this google form. This is how we gather contact information for our supervisors 🙂 We will be in touch soon with detailed information about your responsibility.
- Light green = haven’t filled in the form yet… please do so!
- Dark green = you did! Thank you 🙂
- HELP!!! Hovercraft B & C need help hosting! Let us know if you or someone you know can host this event.

- Science Olympiad Rule Clarifications: Rule clarifications will be printed on March 9th. Please check the rule clarifications frequently but anything posted after March 9th will not be used at our Regional competition.
TOURNAMENT LOGISTICS
- Self-Schedule will open on February 23rd 7 am and will close on March 4th 12 pm. Please test your Avogadro log-in information before hand to assure you are ready for logging in.
- Map of campus (pdf) : Interactive website of maps (for use on cellphone)
- Please turn in your permission forms (one for each participant) AND signed roster sheet (Varsity, JV) electronically. A team will not be able to participate without a valid release for each student on the final roster. If you have submitted your forms electronically, you will simply sign an acknowledgement that everything is still the same, or make minor changes if needed, the day of the tournament.
- Place the roster sheet at the front.
- Place all team members IN ORDER as they are listed on the roster.
- Email this to emily.brazil@illinoisolympiad.org.
- Turn these in by March 10th.
- Medical forms should be completed by the parents of all participants (these do not get turned in but should be on the coach throughout the tournament).

- Science Olympiad Rule Clarifications: Rule clarifications will be printed on March 9th. Please check the rule clarifications frequently but anything posted after March 9th will not be used at our Regional competition.
- Team registration will open at 7:00 AM and last until 9:00 AM.
- You will receive the following handouts (among others) in your coach envelope:
- All participants must be wearing a wristband. There is a limit on Varsity for 15 team members and 15 JV members. Students are not allowed to be jumping between being Varsity and JV competitors. Please put the wristband on your team members so that it can not be slipped off of their wrist! This will be checked by all event supervisors and strictly enforced. If something happens to a wristband, the team coach and the participant must come to headquarters WITH the broken wristband to receive a new one.
- ISO Wristband rules can be found HERE.
- Rule clarifications will be printed on March 9th. Please check the rule clarifications on the State website frequently but anything posted after February 9th will not be used at our Regional competition.
- A reminder that this IS a competitive event. Unlike invitationals, the Regional competition qualifies teams to attend the State event. There WILL be state level arbitrators at the event. If a disagreement or an issue of any kind occurs while you are during an event, please reach out to us ASAP.
- Some arbitration reminders can be found HERE.
- Only coaches wearing a green coach wristband with their name on it will be allowed to arbitrate. NO parents will be allowed to do this.

Food for coaches
We are lucky to have Cafe Willow open throughout the day with food options for breakfast and lunch. The head coach(s) (up to 2) will receive a lunch ticket as a very small token of our appreciation for all the hard work you put into your season by enhancing the lives of your students in such a profound way!
We will have coffee and water available throughout the day in the headquarters room (TBD: In the T wing).
- All teams should head down to the gym as soon as the last event is over. Please clean out the homeroom, pack buses if necessary, and head to the gym.
- We hope to begin the awards ceremony by 4:00 pm. Please be patient as we diligently work with event supervisors to wrap up scores with fidelity. The awards ceremony will be in the gym and we must wait for events to finish up so that CLC can pull the bleachers out on both sides.
